Mr Snyder's suggestion to look for photo's in the online photo catalog of the California State Library is very good information. The second image listed under Emigrant Gap is a shot of the hotel in question.

For photos, I'd suggest the California Room at the State Library in Sacramento, and the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley.
