Solano film footage wanted
From: "Janet Kendall" jlkendall@berkeley.edu
... I am a student at UC Berkeley. I am working on a research project, and I would like to include film footage of the Solano. Do you know if any footage exists? If so, how would I acquire it?
In the 1930s, Southern Pacific made a short black and white publicity film about the opening of its remarkable Benicia-Martinez Cutoff bridge across the straits that Solano and Contra Costa plied, and I seem to recall that it contained a bit of footage of Solano's last ceremonial run on the day the bridge opened to mainline traffic, thus replacing the ferries. And I vaguely recall that a copy of this film might have landed in the film archives of the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. You should contact the CSRM Library staff for further information.
I believe (but I could be wrong) there was some film footage of the Solano in Huell Howser's "California's Gold" episode "Solano Train Ferry" recently shown on public television stations. Video of the episode can be purchased by going to the "California Gold" website (the episode number is 8009).
