Transcontinental Travel, 1880's

From: "Susan Spangler" suprsooz@msn.com

Can you tell me what the likely route and train would have been for someone traveling from San Francisco to Massachusetts in the year 1882/3?

I'm researching my family tree and know that my relatives traveled across country in the early 1880's and probably would have gone by train. Is there a website that would list fares, travel time and/or stops that would have been made on such a trip?

Also, did the railroads keep any type of passenger lists at that time?

  1. For transcontinental railroad travel dates no later than 1873:

There is a book, "Railway passenger lists of overland trains to San Francisco and the West, (Ship 'n rail series)" by Louis J Rasmussen (Volume 1 only).

Also, "Railway Passenger Lists of Overland Trains to San Francisco & the West" Vol. 2: November 12, 1871 to April 23, 1873, Vol. 2 (1968)

I am trying to find CPRR passenger lists from the Ohio to California in the year 1880 / 1881 period give or take a year. Please give me an idea where I can look.

Can you tell me how long it took for the train to travel from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Chicago, Illinois in 1880?

I’m a writer and need to know this for my research. ...
