I have a large Victorian photo (from a glass plate) that has BRADLEY & RULOFSON SAN FRANCISCO at the base of it. It measures 15" x 19" frame dimensions are 27" x 33". Portions of the frame are made of redwood and it came from a Berkeley estate along with a number of early nautical items. There is a color die cut emblem within the decoration on the mat that says E Pluribus Unum. I think it might be a CA senator or person of importance due to the size (expensive at the time) but can't find any name on it other than Bradley & Rulofson.
Do you recognize the sitter or could you suggest another museum to contact?

ReplyDeleteI would advise that you send your email with the images to the three leading Bay Area archives of Californiana: The Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley; The California Historical Society in SF and the Pioneers' Society Library in SF. Stanford University Library might be a worthwhile contact to add in, too. All have expertise in this field and may be able to give better insight.

ReplyDeleteAn update on the sitter in this image. It seems I was on the right track thinking it to be an important person, it is none other than President James A Garfield. It was IDd by a friend who had done some prior research on Garfield and knew it instantly.
