I believe the date to be in the 1860-1870 area. I don't know how rare. (Chris Graves or Lynn Farrar might have a better idea.) I bought it on eBay for about $60-$75, but don't remember exactly how much.
I got my spirit level from an antique store in Folsom, it was $50 or so, I see them from time to time, in various gauges. Not rare. BUT, if that puppy was marked CPRR of CAL., well, then it would have some collector value.

ReplyDeleteI can't speak about the specific level illustrated, but that general design was produced and used well into the 20th century.
