I am authoring a historical fiction book chronicling my grandparents' move from Severy, Kansas to Jerome, Arizona during the first week of June, 1907. I know from previous conversations with my mother that their family rented space in a box car on the "Frisco Line" (St. Louis and San Francisco Railway)/ From there, they would transfer to the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad - to Ash Fork, Arizona. then to the Santa Fe, Prescott, and Phoenix Railway. At Jerome Junction, Arizona, they would transfer onto the Narrow Gauge Railway that went into Jerome.
My question is, what might have been the average amount they paid for approximately 1/4 space on a box car for their personal belongings, such as furniture, steamer trunks, etc.)? I don't need to know the exact rates on those particular trains, but just a ball-park figure would satisfy me greatly, and I would very much appreciate any help you can provide!
