First locomotive over Donner Summit

From: "Bill Oudegeest" bill@donnersummithistoricalsociety.org

I am doing an article about the first locomotive over Donner Summit and would like to know if anyone knows where I can find a picture of the Baldwin locomotive, the San Mateo or a picture of a like locomotive. ...

One of the A. A. Hart photos shows what is clearly a Baldwin loco on the insular track east of Truckee, pulling a couple of flat cars. CP had very few Baldwins, so this is most likely the Western Pacific loco San Mateo, which we know from contemporary accounts was the first loco hauled over the summit in the summer of 1867. It is possible that one or two of the remaining Western Pacific Baldwins was among the couple of locos sledded over the summit in February 1868, but we do not (yet) know the names of the later locos.
