Book by Francis Colton c. 1869
I have been searching for quite awhile for a book or booklet written by Francis Colton about 1869 +/-. He is a cousin to David Douty Colton. Colton was born in Galesburg, Illinois.
He worked for the U.P. and CPRR in England to promote the use of ships to New York and then the train to San Francisco. Then passage by ship to the Orient.
The title of his work is A New Way Around the World. It is supposed to have some nice pictures. I just found your site and thought I would ask. I have asked at all the major railroad museums and libraries including England.
I do not want to give up. I am writing a small book about him and his brother John.
I would appreciate any information or advice.

Sorry, we do not have a copy, nor have we been able to locate one for sale or in a library. Are you sure about the author and title? Could you instead be referring to the following?:

... What you found is very interesting regarding Charles Coffin and a book with the nearly same title I had searched Alibris and Abe Books before but possibly someone just got a copy.
I'm not certain if this is the same book but I will order it to find out. I'm also a railroad buff so I can add it to my library anyway. It is interesting that it is the same time period.
In his biography it clearly states he wrote a book. I'll include a few lines for your interst. "In 1871 Mr. Colton was appointed foreign agent of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railways. He arranged with all steamer and railway lines for a "round-the-world" ticket. He was sent to Japan and China to turn the tea trade to San Francisco, the result of which was greatly increased freight business for both roads. Fast tea trains from San Francisco to Chicago and New York could successfully compete with all-water lines by way of the Suez canal to London and New York. To further emphasize this new departure in Oriental traffic Mr. Colton wrote and published a book illustrated with pictures of American sleeping and dining cars, "Our New Way Around the World."

I've tried all but Huntington and I'm trying to get reader privileges there. You have to apply to do research there.
