What type of "fuel" was used by the CP (Jupiter) and the UP Engne No 119 at Prommatory Summit? They both had different stacks ... why?

The UP (119) burned coal while CP (Jupiter) used wood. By December of 1869 CP subsidary Western Pacific was experimenting with coal between Oakland and Sacramento.

"Jupiter," like other CP locomotives of the time, burned wood. The "119" burned coal. And that difference is the primary reason for the different stacks.

The CP "Jupiter" was a wood burner, as testified by the large spark arrester stack on top. The UP #119 was a coal burner, with the spark arrester in the extended smokebox and a straight stack.
