From: KyleKWyatt@gmail.com

Following is a list from the key of figures in the Hill painting, The Last Spike. The question is, who was actually there, and who was not?

Lewis Metzler Clement was in Washington, D.C.

S.S. Montague was Chief Engineer in 1869.

Dr. J.D.B. Stillman came to Promontory on Stanford's train.

Mrs. J. H. Strowbridge (Hill's spelling) is Mrs. J.H. Strobridge.

At the time of the driving of the last spike, S.S. Montague (#54) was Chief Engineer (not Assistant Engineer), while L.M. Clement (#56), the Chief Assistant Engineer and Superintendent of Track, was most definitely not at Promontory as he was in Washington, DC, where he was completing the report of the special Pacific Railroad Commission of which he was a member and which was filed with the Secretary of the Interior on May 14, 1869.

Silas Seymour was there. He is in the photo of UP officials sitting around a table in a "private" car. The photo is in Bain – first photo section, identified as Russell H5-3.

Seymour's career began as a flag man on a surveying crew on the Erie, he rose to become construction superintendent on the Erie and drove that road's last spike. He was contractor (for a time) on the Louisville & Nashville, and contractor (for a time) on the Sacramento Valley RR. He was the man who got Judah hired as chief engineer on the SVRR. He was not (as is often stated) the brother of NY Governor Horatio Seymour.
