Bloomers Cut - Auburn, CA

From: "Mike Emmert" mike@mectc.com

I would like to make contact ... regarding the current historical designation status of Bloomers Cut ... and share with you that a development proposal on the west side of Bloomers Cut currently being processed by the City of Auburn requires that a bridge be built over the top of Bloomers Cut and has the potential of doing damage to this wonderful piece of history.

The original route of the Central Pacific from Sacramento has been determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Any original structures or features – such as Bloomers Cut – would be considered contributive elements to the eligible property. In addition, properties determined eligible for the NRHP are automatically included in the California Register of Historical Resources. Both these listings require consideration under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and, as applicable, under the provisions of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and under the provisions of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. I recall that the C.P. alignment is also a listed California Historical Landmark.

You should contact the staff of the California Office of Historic Preservation Office for further information on how to ensure the City complies with these requirements. Phone 916-653-6624 or e-mail calshpo@parks.ca.gov.

Good luck and keep us all posted.

Mr. Snyder....thank you for your message which was full of valuable information. My quest is to see that Bloomers Cut is properly preserved and that if and when a bridge is built over the top of the Cut that it acknowledges the history of the CPRR and those men who built it.

Thank you.....in fact I talked with Chris Graves last night who filled me with additional historical information as he was part of the team at the Son's of the Golden West who wrote the words for the brass plaque currently located at the current end of Herdal Drive just short of the UPRR right-of-way.....

Ouch! While I am indeed in the NSGW, I had nothing to do with the current plaque at Bloomer Cut. That item has a number of errors in it, I would surely not want to be connected with the creation of that item.
I have been asked, and have created, the NEW brass plaque to be erected by the owner of the proposed brige, Mr. Desjardin. I was assisted in that creation by the current as well as past Pres'ts. of the Placer Co. Historical Society, and the Reference Librarian at the Placer Co. Library in Auburn.
Thank You for correcting the error contained in the email of Mr. Emmert on July 2, 2009.
