Irish workers on the Union Pacific RR

From: "Kim Pearson" sixpearsons@nc.rr.com

We are doing a report on the Transcontinental RR. We are finding a lot of information about the Chinese immigrants that worked on the RR; however, we can find very little information about the Irish immigrants that worked for the Union Pacific RR. Can you give us some direction?

If one were to compose one sentence re: the Irish workers, (I would hesitate to use the word "emigrants", as the Irish had been on US soil for generations) perhaps a person would be hard put to fashion a better one then that spoken by Gen'l. Dodge: "The Irish labor, with its stikes, its dead fall whiskey shops and reckless disregard of all our interests, must be gotten out of the way."
See 'Union Pacific', Maury Klein, page 238.
