Travel from Baltimore MD (or New York City) to San Francisco by train in 1915
I'm doing research for a book, and have been trying to find the amount of time it took to travel from Baltimore MD (or New York City) to San Francisco by train in 1915. Is there a schedule online that would describe a complete transcontinental trip from that era? Is there a resource that would describe the rail fares for such a trip? ...

-There are several options
From Baltimore the most common route would be via B&O to Chicago, but Pennsylvania RR also offered service.
From New York, one could either take the New York Central via Albany, or the Pennsylvania via Harrisburg and Pittsburg.
From Chicago, the most common route would be Chicago Northwestern to Union Pacific to Central Pacific, but you could travel via Burlington to Denver, then D&RG to Salt Lake, then either Central Pacific or Western Pacific to San Francisco.
There is a copy of the 1915 Official Guide on the CPRR web site … you can spend hours looking at schedules and working out various routes.
One other option … In 1915 San Francisco hosted the Panama Pacific Exposition, and as a result there would have been lots of ads for service to the fair… Look at contemporary magazines for ads…

THANK YOU. I was having a difficult time sorting through all the information I had come across. Your information was very helpful.
Randy, yes, my hero is going to the Panama Pacific International Exposition to manage its Zone area.
