How else would one manage a large number of workers? Workers and armies had been – and still are – organized into teams. A team can be directed by a leader, can focus on its task, and can bond into a brotherhood. And competition between teams can be exploited for motivation. The "generals" can deal with the big picture, the relationship between the various tasks, while their "colonels" can direct the team leaders. But the work is done by teams.
