It is important to name the first transcontinental railroad correctly because the incorrectly used terminology "intercontinental railroad" actually refers to a different project which is described in a 19th century multivolume report:

Intercontinental Railway Commission. Report Of Surveys And Explorations Made By Corps #2 of Costa Rica, Columbia and Ecuador. 1891-1893. Vol. 2. Washington, D.C., 1896. [9"x11". 326 pages. Cloth binding. Photographs. Many fold out maps throughout showing the railroad routes through the various Central American countries. Half of the book is written in English, the other half in Spanish. This is volume 2 only. Photographs of various towns, natural scenes of country sides of Columbia and Ecuador. An early report on the railroad routes through these Central and South American countries with many fold out maps of the railroad routes through these locations.]
