#86 was a Rogers Locomotive, called "Gorilla."

I'm not sure the lock number relates to locomotive #86, although I suppose it is not impossible. I'd consider it unlikely, but would not rule it out.

No. The small numbers stamped on the CPRR locks are presumably the last two digits of the year of manufacture, and the month. So the two locks illustrated in the photographs were made in 1886, and July, 1884, respectively.

When it was FIRST incorporated in 1861, the name was Central Pacific Rail Road Company of California.
When it was reincorporated, October 8, 1864, the name was changed to Central Pacific Railroad of California.
When it was once again reincorporated, on October 22, 1870, the name was changed to Central Pacific Railroad Company.

The "86" is clear in the first photo of the CPRR of Cal lock ... Under the corrosion and crud on this lock case there is probably another number between 1 and 12 stamped along the edge near the "86". These numbers indicate the month and year of manufacture or the lock's first usage. Any connection to CPRR engine #86 is highly unlikely.
