Gilliss - "Tunnels of the Pacific Railroad"
From: "Kyle Wyatt" kylekwyatt@gmail.com
You may know that the original article by John Gilliss - Tunnels of the Pacific Railroad - was published in the Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Volume 1, pgs 153-171. This is available from Google Books as a free download – although of course Google neglects to unfold the diagrams and maps.
The version on the CPRR Museum web site, John R. Gilliss, "TUNNELS OF THE PACIFIC RAILROAD." Van Nostrand's Eclectic Engineering Magazine, January 5 (actually April, no day, see pg 337), 1870, p. 418-423, is a slightly abridged version - and certainly lacks the diagrams and maps. I note Google Books also has this issue on line.
It would be great if you could put up a copy of the ASCE version – preferably with the fold-out diagrams.

The CPRR.org version of the Gilliss article on the Tunnels of the Pacific Railroad is copied from the Van Nostrum's version. That version is text only without tables and cross sections with with added photos, and an excerpt of the Vose map.
I just found an Internet Archive version of the Transactions American Society of Civil Engineers, 1872, Vol 1, that (unlike Google) folded out
the profile, and also has the tables at the end of the article (as Google also does).
It is a copy of a paper delivered to the Society on Jan 5, 1870 by Gilliss. It is printed on pp 153-171. As I noted, it includes the cross-sections opposite p158 and Appendix tables A-F on pp 167-171, but unfortunately it is still missing the drawing of tunnel timbering (for UP, not CP) opposite pg 165 (apparently missing in the volume copied).
The Google version of the Transactions American Society of Civil Engineers, 1872, Vol 1 is here or here. It includes the Appendix tables, but does not fold out the cross section and the tunnel timbering diagram.
Van Nostrand's Engineering Magazine, vol 2, Jan-June 1870 is here: see the Gilliss article pp 418-423. This includes the text only – no diagrams nor Appendixes. Note this was published in April 1870 (per pg 337), not January – and no day is given.
Note John Gilliss' name has 2 "s"s. Many times people have spelled it with only one "s".

Are there any other pages or diagrams available that are not included in the above Gilliss article on the Tunnels of the Pacific Railroad links?

Looks good. That covers what we have right now. Somewhere we should come up with the tunnel lining diagram facing pg 164 (part of which shows up in the Google copy).
