Photographs of Leland Stanford with railroads

From: "Marc Shaffer" marcashaffer@comcast.net

... I'm making a documentary film on Eadweard Muybridge. I’m wondering ... have you ever encountered a photograph of Leland Stanford with railroads? The only image I've seen is the painting of the last spike.

If you’re interested in keeping up with our film – please visit the website from time to time and check the news tab – www.muybridgethemovie.com. Spread the word.

It's a film about Muybridge and his time – and so of course there’s some discussion of the emergence of steam trains along with other world-changing technologies (including the camera).

See,

Hart stereograph #356 (690mi from Sacramento)
Alfred A. Hart stereograph caption: "The Last Rail is laid. Scene at Promontory Point, May 10, 1869."
Same as Stanford Album: #357
Mead Kibbey comment: Taken from center of track at laying of Laurel Tie - STANFORD HAS HAMMER ON SHOULDER - little boy, front - huge crowd at sides.

Stanford possibly is included in other crowd photographs at the Promontory last spike ceremony.

There is a stereograph of Stanford sitting inside a Pullman car. Unfortunately, I've only seen this for sale on line. I don't know of an copy of this image in a public collection. Perhaps someone on this [discussion group] knows where you might find it.

Subject: Re: documentary film question - photograph of Leland Stanford with railroads

Thank you! found it there – this is the best I can find of Stanford with railroads; I'm sure you'll agree – odd! This is a man whose fortune was made with railroads – you'd think there'd be lots of pictures with him – and this is the only one of him at Promontory Point – despite all those other celebratory images – no Stanford. ...

Alfred A. Hart, the official photographer for the CPRR likely had the primary purpose of documenting with stereographs the ongoing railroad construction success to support sales of railroad bonds by prospectus in the East. So Hart needed to do his photography in the wilderness where the construction was progressing, and probably would not have been in the same place at the same time as Gov. Stanford to be able to photograph Stanford with the railroad images.

Best wishes for success with your project.
