ATCHISON, TOPEKA & SANTA FE RAILWAY. RECORD BREAKING RUN OF THE SCOTT SPECIAL. LOS ANGELES TO CHICAGO, 44 HOURS & 54 MINUTES. N. P.: Privately printed, n.d. [ca. 1945]. 9" x 8" pictorial wrappers. [16]pp (including wrappers), illustrated from photographs, portraits, map. The Scott "Special" was named after Walter Scott, a mining entrepreneur, who approached the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Company in 1905 and at a cost of $5500.00 paid in cash to the railway company, the deal was struck. The objective was to travel between Los Angeles and Chicago to beat the previous record time of 46 hours. The complete story is told by Frank Newton Holman, who rode on the train. The Scott Special Train consisting of a baggage car, dining car and Pullman car for a total weight of 170 tons, left Los Angeles @ 1 P.M., July 9, 1905 and arrived in Chicago @ 11:54 A.M., July 11, 1905. A distance of 2265 miles, in a time of 44 hours and 54 minutes, with an average speed of 50.4 miles per hour, including all delays. A 9" x 16" black & white map in the center of the brochure shows the route, towns, speeds, etc. of the journey. Five different steam engines were used for the trip. Inside facts about the run are provided along with comparisons to other notable Santa Fe runs. Information about each of the engines, the engineers, and trainmen is provided.

This revised and enlarged edition has the number of engravings increased from 811 in the original first edition to 2,188. All drawings that appeared in the previous edition also appear in this edition, but 156 of the 811 engravings have been made over to obtain larger or better views. The book is divided into essentially six classifications including: Cars, Car-Bodies, Car-Body Details, Furnishings, Trucks, and Truck Details. The book was published to provide Mechanical Engineers and train manufacturing workers with invaluable information for each train car and its components.

A third map shows counties in Nebraska in 1870, and the Union Pacific Railroad lands, first 200 miles, grants of 1862-64. A description of the Nebraska lands are provided county by county. The available lands are contained in alternate sections of one square mile each, within a breadth of twenty miles on either side of the railroad and extend along the entire line. They extend through central Nebraska, southern Wyoming, and northern Colorado and Utah, and include within their limits the splendid agricultural lands of the Platte Valley, the great natural pastures of the Laramie Plains and the valleys of Lodge Pole Creek and Bear River, and the rich iron and coal fields between the Black Hills and the Wahsatch Mountains. First Rand, McNally & Co. edition, thus, of this uncommon Union Pacific Railroad route map intended to be used by travel agents, and passenger agents in Union Pacific stations across the West. The map demarcates the Overland Route, and connections with the Oregon Short Line RR Co., Oregon RR & Navigation Co., and the Southern Pacific in bold red stretching West from Kansas City, Leavenworth, St. Joseph, Omaha, Council Bluffs, Sioux City, & Fort Worth. A version of this map was initially released in 1892 by Reeves with the Knight, Leonard & Co., and a little larger by a couple inches as it included insets for Sandwich Islands, and Alaska, whereas this version focuses only on the Continental United States. The map is in nice condition and provides an excellent panorama of the Union Pacific Railway. Lines in red and run from Kansas City, Atchison, and Omaha to Denver and south to Gunnison or west through Cheyenne, Granger and onto Portland with a spur up to Helena or west through Ogden and onto San Francisco with a spur down to Los Angeles. Blue shaded illustrations surround the lines which include a plowing scene, Union Depot, Salt Lake City, Garfield Beach, a mining scene, Falls of the Yellowstone, a ranching scene, etc. Union Pacific produced guide for the would-be tourist of Salt Lake City including a description of the Mormons and their customs. Illustrated with nine full-page engravings from photographs by C.R. Savage. Also provided are List of Agents. Pullman Palace Car rates.
