Not sure what you mean by "abandoned" as the basic route over the Sierra Nevada mountains as planned by T.D. Judah, Doc Strong, and implemented by locating engineer Lewis M. Clement is still in use with only slight changes.

This gentleman reviewed the 1864 map compiled by Montague, and immediately recognized the challenge in locating current landmarks. He was happy to find a copy of the 1894 map "Placer County Citrus Colony", this map in great detail shows current landmarks from Loomis to NewCastle.
