Re: Good Sites for Old Photos

From: Kevin Bunker mikadobear45@yahoo.com

Hmmm...no kidding! I wonder if the one (see attached) shows the Towle Bros spur below the sheds...or is this some forgotten M of W access track, perhaps for servicing the sheds from below, say, with a fire train (such as spraying the sheds down in summer heat)?

My great greatgrandfather, Charles Anderson Stanley, was an engineer for 3 years for Towle Bros. Railroad, 1877 to 1880. He would have been an engineer for Porter engines no. 1 or no. 2. I have been trying, without success, to obtain photos of either or both of those engines. Does anyone know where I can locate such photos? Any help or leads greatly appreciated. Thanks. Re: Photo's of Towle Bros. RR Porter engines

If Mr. Ralls contacts me directly, I can put him in touch with folks in this area that collect photos of the Towle Bros. lumber railroad. I have seen photos of the locomotives he is looking for, the owners of which would be most pleased to share them with Mr. Ralls.

The Bancroft Library, located on the UC Berkeley campus, houses the Roy Graves photo collection, which contains multiple views of these engines on Towle Brothers. I believe there is a searchable on-line catalog for The Bancroft, which last time I looked, did not display all the images in digital form but would let you identify images by catalog description. Copies of these images are a little pricey – I paid $50 recently for a high resolution scan of a single Roy Graves photo. But hopefully, you'll be able to find what you're looking for.

I know there are photos of the Towle locomotives – I've seen copies. You might try the California State Railroad Museum Library.
