Question: Dating piece of cup or bowl with the seal "Southern Pacific Company-Sunset-Ogden-Shasta Routes"
We found a piece of cup or bowl with the seal "Southern Pacific Company-Sunset-Ogden-Shasta Routes"
I am curious about the date of this piece of pottery.
It was found on the grounds of Davis Monthan Air Force Base.
When did it travel through here?
Any answers would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Diana

I'm going to guess the pottery pattern is what is known as "Harriman Blue." This is actually somewhat of a misnomer, because it was clearly used by Southern Pacific before Harriman acquired the railroad in 1901 – as well as after the acquisition. In particular on your piece, the "Ogden Route" was renamed the "Overland Route" about 1898. Attached is a sample of the "Harriman Blue" style.

... Davis Monthan was established during World War II and SP had to make a line change to get around the new base. But how did the porcelain get on the ground? If it was tossed from a train it dates to 1942 or before. If a flyboy who took the train to Tucson took it with him as a souvenir and later discarded it on the base it could be years later.
