An example of the time it took to travel from the east coast before the railroad is the trip from Portland, Maine, to San Francico that my gg grandfather documented in his diary. He sailed on September 18, 1849, and was in SF on February 15, 1850. This was by sailing ship via Cape Horn. I believe there were a few steam ships operating that early, they would have made better time.
