How long did it take to build the railroad across the country?

The first transcontinental railroad from Omaha, Nebraska to Sacramento, California was built from 1863-1869.

How would you answer this question, if "across the country" means from the East coast?

It took from the first railroad construction in the early 1830s until 1869 to build across the country ... and it was 1883 (January 12) before a single railroad (the Southern Pacific) actually completed its own line connecing the Pacific with the Atlantic (Gulf of Mexico - New Orleans). Southern Pacific began that construction in 1868 (or there abouts, unless you want to choose the start date of the San Francisco & San Jose in the early 1860s).
