UPRR shovels, construction equipment and supplies

From: "Creig Muscato" Creig_Muscato@hotmail.com

Where could I find information on the total purchases of the Union Pacific railroad of equipment and supplies during construction of the road.

I am specifically interested in who (what manufacturer) supplied the shovels to the UP during construction and what was the purchase volume? ...

The Ames brothers made their fortune selling shovels to the 1849 gold miners and supplied shovels to the CPRR. Since their personal involvement was with the Union Pacific which they helped finance, presumably they also supplied shovels to the UPRR.

The shovels were almost certainly from Ames. Oliver Ames was a UP board member ...

Ames is known to have supplied shovels to the CP as well. The story is Oliver Ames became involved with UP because of his relationship with Huntington Hopkins hardware.
