Father of Emma Frances Dawson

From: "John Pinkney" jpinkney@gmail.com

This may be a stretch but here goes. I'm doing a book on a California writer named Emma Frances Dawson who died in 1926. She claimed that her father was an important fellow in the building of the railroad in the 1860's (I believe the family moved to San Francisco then) but I cannot establish his position or for that matter his existence. ...

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or referrals you may provide,

What is his full name, and other biographical details? You should be able to obtain this from genealogy sources, or a professional genealogy researcher.

A search of the CPRR Museum did not find the name, Dawson as a railroad employee. We know of no book that would likely be particularly helpful.

Suggest that you examine the paper CPRR payroll records at the California State Railroad Museum.

With his full name, perhaps a Google search might find that it was another railroad.

A bio of Emma Frances Dawson (1851-1926) can be found at "A Dictionary of North American Authors deceased before 1950" compiled by W. Stewart Wallace, Toronto, Ryerson Press, 1951.

Here are a couple of "ifs" for you to consider: IF your Emma Frances Dawson was born on May 2, 1851, her father was James Madison Dawson. He was born in Maryland Nov. 30, 1808, died March 8, 1883. He appears on the California Census of 1870 living in Alviso, a suburb of San Jose. He was 62 at that time, and unemployed. G J Graves
