Map of the Union Pacific Railroad and Connections, c. 1867

From: "MilaDiNapoli" mila.ma@wanadoo.fr

I am a French scholar (PhD) working on Railroad maps. ... I would need the source of some of them, which is not mentioned. This information may be of great importance in explaining its use. ... For example, could you tell me where the map entitled Map of the Union Pacific Railroad and its Connections comes from?

Whatever information we have available is noted on the webpage on which the map image is displayed, which can be reached from the CPRR Museum's maps exhibit.

The "Map of the Union Pacific Railroad and its Connections" as you see it online is the complete item as it was found, so we have no way of knowing the publication details beyond what appears on the map.

If this was not printed separately, but included in a publication, our best guess is that this could have been a foldout map made a part of an earlier Union Pacific Railroad Company prospectus or report similar to the one shown as page "D" of the report Progress of the Union Pacific railroad west from Omaha, Nebraska, across the continent, making, with its connections, an unbroken line from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean.

For citation format, see our FAQ.

Can anyone verify that this map came from a UPRR progress report or prospectus, and if so, which one?

These maps were from

"UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD ACROSS THE CONTINENT WEST FROM OMAHA, NEBRASKA ... AN UNBROKEN LINE FROM THE ATLANTIC TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN"

There were various editions in 1867, 68 etc.

There are some interesting "errors" on the map which suggest it dates a bit earlier, probably 1864 or before.

It shows the line going south of the Great Salt Lake, not north as laid.

The Union Pacific is shown as extending to the California Border... (it is a heavier line that the CP) as described in the original Pacific Railroad Act (later extended to allow the lines to meet in Utah).

The route from Sacramento to Oakland is strange.... and listed as Central Pacific, not Western Pacific. The original Western Pacific line, defined by mid 1863 (and not accepted by an update of the Pacific Railroad Act until late 1864) was to San Jose, not Oakland, and the Oakland extension would not be defined until after the CP takeover of the Western Pacific late1867/early 1868.

Is this series that you mention the same publication, or where there two series with different purposes?:

They had at least two different titles but were essentially the same publication. Different years if I remember correctly. Here is a list of the copies at the UP Museum.

I have an original printed copy of this map which was on page 216 of the newspaper "Northwestern Christian Advocate" dated July 3, 1867. It occupies the top third of the page of this tabloid and was probably reproduced from the prospectus.
