What kind of writing did the school kids do after the completion of the transcontinental railroad?

After several decades of browsing, we found about a dozen 19th century school books (1860-1899). Only one of them mentioned the transcontinental railroad, so this does not appear to have been an important part of the curriculum. Perhaps everyone knew about the completion of the first transcontinental railroad from newspaper accounts, or maybe the Crédit Mobilier scandal, only four years later, discouraged inclusion in lessons???
