Transcontinental Railroad Cost

Your website is incredibly informative! Could you tell me what the final cost of the first transcontinental railroad was? I find that it was originally estimated at $136 million but I never was able to find the final tally (and we all know any government project will go over the estimate!).

The final cost has never been determined. The 1886 Congressional investigation which Lynn Farrar is the expert was created to make the actual determination. I'm not really sure they ever figured it out. If you are very young, and have no life, you might be able to determine the actual cost by the time you die. I'd find something better to do, like watch the library close.
