Early gauge track spirit level

I am very excited to have found your website. I have been searching for hours and hours, as I have recently acquired a leveling tool that has taken some time to find out what it was used for. I have an early gauge track spirit level. Please find attached photos of it. On the ruler, are the numbers 1586 as well as the symbol and the letter M. It is in very good condition and I would love to find out as much as possible about it. Especially the age of it. Also, I am very curious what the all the markings mean. ...
