Stock Market - Dow Jones Railroad Average

The United States' stock market in the 19th century consisted mainly of railroad company stocks.

"The [transportation] average was created on July 3, 1884 by Charles Dow, co-founder of Dow Jones & Company, as part of the Customer's Afternoon Letter." The Union Pacific Railroad was included in the original average.

The average was updated on February 16, 1885 and at that time the Central Pacific Railroad was included.
